The Dragon Boat Festival is a time to celebrate Chinese culture and tradition. The festival is said to have originated over 2,000 years ago, when the poet Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River. To commemorate his death, people raced dragon boats to try to save him. Today, dragon boat racing is still a popular tradition during the Dragon Boat Festival.
Other Festival Traditions
In addition to dragon boat racing, the Dragon Boat Festival is also a time to eat zongzi, a type of sticky rice dumpling. People also hang up mugwort and calamus, two plants that are said to ward off evil spirits.
