Michelin-Starred Crown Shy Founder and Former CDC of Eleven Madison Park Dies Suddenly
The culinary world mourns the loss of a visionary chef and advocate for mental health in the hospitality industry
James Kent, the acclaimed chef behind some of New York City's top restaurants, has died at the age of 45, his hospitality group announced on Saturday. Kent, a distinguished chef and successful Manhattan restaurateur, had a 30-year career in the industry and seemed poised to become a food-industry tycoon.
Kent won the Bocuse d'Or USA in 2010 and was the former Executive Chef of the NoMad, which received one Michelin Star during his tenure. In 2019, he opened Crown Shy at 70 Pine in the Financial District, which quickly became a critical and commercial success.
Kent was also known for his advocacy for work-life balance and prioritizing mental health in the hospitality industry. His death has cast a pall over Downtown and the Wall Street area, where his restaurants were located.
The cause of Kent's death has not yet been released.
